About Us at HeartSafe Moore County
Who?

HeartSafe Moore County consists of a group of dedicated community leaders with an interest in improving the heart health and safety of all Moore County residents. HeartSafe Moore County is a 501c3 not-for-profit organization that operates under the umbrella of MooreHealth, a Healthy Carolinians affiliate.

Established during the fall of 2007, the group intends to address the issue of sudden cardiac arrest through the purchase and maintenance of community-based AED equipment, associated training, and long-term maintenance and support services.

HeartSafe Moore County is a short-term organization with the potential for long-term community impact. The group intends to develop a sustainable program that will benefit area residents and visitors for many years to come.

What?

Our Goal

Together we will implement and expand an efficient and effective network for utilizing an AED in a timely fashion when needed in all of Moore County.

Our Mission

Saving Moore Lives through Public Access Defibrillation

When?

Efforts are currently underway to identify those businesses and public buildings that house AEDs. In November, a special kickoff presentation will highlight the progress of the program and encourage other organizations to get involved.

Members are working to contact potential contributors as well as other funding resources to expedite the placement of the AEDs.

Jo Ellen Yates of Pinehurst made the first financial contribution to the community-wide effort with a $7500 gift to the Kids In Crisis Fund of the Foundation of FirstHealth. Mrs. Yates’ generosity allowed the group to purchase the first AEDs.

The Kiwanians in Southern Pines also purchased an AED and have challenged other civic organizationsto match their contribution.

Where?

AEDs are a cost-effective tool in treating sudden cardiac arrest.By working to share information about the value of the technology, we hope to encourage many area businesses and community organizations to place AEDs in their public buildings and community areas. Some of the primary targets include: schools, workplaces, churches, golf courses, hotel/motels, restaurants, athletic venues and any other location where people gather.

Why?

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is the leading cause of death in the United States resulting in nearly 400,000 deaths each year. It can occur anywhere, anytime, anyplace and at any age.

SCA occurs when the heart’s electrical impulses misfire. The heart is unable to effectively pump blood causing blood flow to the brain to stop abruptly. Death usually follows within minutes.

The first ten minutes following a sudden cardiac event are critical. In fact, there is a 10% decrease in survival for every minute of delay. The only treatment for sudden cardiac arrest is defibrillation—or an electric shock to the heart.

Geographically, Moore County covers a large area with population centers spread throughout. Although, the Moore County EMS offers the appropriate number of ambulances for a community our size, response times vary due to the geographical challenges. Typically, EMS personnel arrive on the scene in approximately 10-12 minutes.

How?

An AED or Automated External Defibrillator is a small, battery-operated, portable device that can deliver an electric shock to the heart to restore normal rhythm to a heart attack victim. It is virtually foolproof and safe to operate. The units will not deliver a shock unless the victim is in cardiac arrest.

By placing AED units in populated areas, HeartSafe Moore County hopes to impact the survival rate of those individuals who experience heart attacks suddenly in our community. EMS personnel will have access to information about the location of AEDs. If a dispatcher receives a call about a potential heart attack, he or she can direct the caller to the nearest AED to maximize treatment during the first critical minutes following an attack.

HeartSafe Moore County has entered into an agreement with Cardiac Science, a leading distributor of AEDs to ensure our local community has access to a quality, cost-effective product. In addition, the group has created policies, procedures and emergency plans that your business or organization can customize. It’s a simple, one-stop approach that’s guaranteed to save lives!
